ABOUT
Our Story
As a child, founder Nick Bohner had a passion for heavy machinery, green tractors in particular. With no clear path to obtaining his dream of owning and operating equipment, he began shovelling neighbours’ driveways before and after school at age 11. The initial years were a slow grind, he worked tirelessly by himself in the early hours of the morning to service a handful of loyal customers. Everything changed when he met his first mentor at age 14, a man named Paul Vanderzon from Montreal. It turns out that in Quebec, entrepreneurs are known as “deniers” use agricultural tractors with a special attachment known as an inverted snowblower. This business model is so effective that it’s used to clear upwards of 80% of all residential driveways in the province! Quebecers have now come to expect a very high level of service. Each of these tractors will service between 100-200 driveways per route, completing a pass in no more than 4hours so that follow-up runs can be completed during the day on large events. Each driveway is marked withtwo posts on either side to avoid lawn damage and to help the operator identify their properties. Since each tractor is able to effectively serve such a significant number of driveways in a short time (30 secs-2 minutes visit), they’re able to offer a very affordable flat rate for the entire winter.
When Nick began learning about this business model, something just clicked. He realized that the level of snow service that homeowners in Ontario were receiving was woefully lacking. Any competitor he spoke to saw driveways as a headache rather than an opportunity, they would complain about the hassle of driveways but offered no real solution for their customers. These contractors would work all night servicing their commercial properties and then come to clear the driveways when their customers had already left for work, not a very customer-centric model. Rather than follow in the footsteps of his unimaginative peers, Nick saw the opportunity to combine his passion for machines with the need for a higher level of residential snow service in Ontario. Leading the charge in southwestern Ontario, Nix Snow now has a fleet of more than 25 machines and almost 40employees. Currently servicing every 1/5 homeowners in Stratford. Based on this success, Nix expanded to London and is now servicing thousands more happy homeowners. Due to overwhelming demand, we have also decided to franchise, with locations being added in the towns of St.Mary’s, Tavistock, and New Hamburg for the 2022/23 season!
